The Dashavtar | 10 Incarnation of Lord Vishnu

Today, I’m going to present you the famous 10 Incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This mythology based post describes the 10 avatara (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu at different time scenario. The ten avtara of Lord Vishnu is known as a Dashavatara. The Lord Vishnu appeared with different look every time and defeat or destroy the demons, and rebuild the religion that is Dharma. His each avatara (form) learned us something new and positive regarding our Karma (deeds), Dharma (religious), Non-violence (ahimsa) and so on. The Lord Vishnu have been taken nine avatar on earth, only one is remain. So, I will present every avatar of Lord Vishnu with his image, description and video link which show the story of every avtara (incarnation).

1. The Matsya Avatar – a Giant Fish :-

Lord Vishnu took first avatar of Matsya. Matsya was the Giant Fish. This avatar was taken to save the Manu King from the deluge (Pralaya). Before the ten days of deluge, The lord Vishnu informed to king Manu to collect all living thing, creatures, plants, rishis, planets etc. After ten days, the deluge occurred and the lord Vishnu come in giant fish form with boat and took all people along with Manu in his boat. And he carries to all in the new world.

2. The Kurma Avatar – a Giant Tortoise :-

This second form of lord Vishnu appeared during the Samudra Manthan (churning the ocean of milk). Kurma avatar is the giant tortoise. During Samudra Manthan, the mandara mount was stated in the centre as a strong pillar/stone and vasuki naag (snake) had been used as a rope for churning process. One side of rope was held by the Dev and the other side of rope was held by Danav. When the churning stuff (Mandara Mount) started to sink, then the lord Vishnu took the avatar of Kurma to bear the weight of the mountain. Kurma supports the mount.

3. The Varah Avatar – a boar :-

This third avatar of Lord Vishnu was Varah, a boar. He incarnated to kill the demon king Hiranyaksh, who had took the earth planet (Prithvi Devi) and hidden it at the bottom of the ocean. To save the Prithvi Devi and also earth people, Varah appeared and did fight with Hiranyaksh. The battle between Varah & Hiranyaksh is believed to have tasted for a thousand years, which finally won by Lord Vishnu (Varah). After defeating the demon, the Lord Varah carried the earth (Prithvi) out of the ocean between his tusks and set it to its place in the solar system.

4. The Nrusinha or Narsimha Avatar – half man & half lion :-

This half man & half lion avatar was the fourth form of Lord Vishnu to kill the younger brother of Hiranyaksh that is Hiranyakashyap. Hiranyakashyap had been blessed by boon of Lord Brahma to not kill during day-night, not by divine weapon (Astra) and weapon, not outside or inside home, not by man and animal. By this boon, he was considered himself as a God, even forced to people to worshipping him as a god. But here, his Prahlad named son was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Many times, he tried to divert the prahlad to stop the chanting of Lord Vishnu, but Prahlad was strong determined about Lord Vishnu. One day, when the Hiranyakashyap has been going to kill to his son Prahlad, then suddenly the lord Vishnu appeared with half man& half lion from the pillar. Due to half man & half lion appearance, this avatar is known as a Narsimha or Nrusinha. The lord narsimha and demon hiranyakashyap ‘ s bettle was extremely horrible. At the end, the lord drove that demon king to middle place of the house that is chokhat (not outside and inside place) at the evening time, and took him in his lap and killed with his sharped nails.

5. The Vaman Avatar – a dwarf :-

This fifth avatar of lord Vishnu was in the form of Vaman, a dwarf. He took this avatar to take back the triloka : Swarg (Heaven), Prithvi (Earth) & Patal (nether world) from the Bali king. Bali has won the heaven. One day, he organized a Yagya to celebrate his victory, then suddenly the lord Vishnu appeared as a little monk /rishi at king’s Yagya palace. Bali king warmly welcomed to the vaman rishi. And bali told him that he is able to give anything which he asks. Then Vaman asked to give him only 3 stride of land, and king agreed to give this. But at that time the Lord Vaman changed his size into giant ‘Trivikram’ form, by his first stride he covered the earthly realm, by second stride he covered the heavenly realm and with the third stride he paused and ask to king where he took his third stride? By this, the bali understood that the lord Vishnu came here in the form of Vaman. By realising it, he urged to lord vaman to took third stride on his head. The incarnation did so and thus, granted Bali immortality and making him the ruler of Patal loka (Nether world).

6. The Parshuram Avatar – warrior with axe :-

The sixth avatar of lord Vishnu was Parshuram, a warrior with axe. He was one and only son of Rishi Jamdagni and Mata Renuka. He was the first Brahmin – kshatriya in Hinduism or warrior sage who had to follow the dharma of both i.e. Brahmin as well as Kshatriya. He destroyed the kshatriya on earth 21 times over to take revenge with the king kartavirya arjun. Kartavirya arjun’s son killed his father and mother, because the parshuram came at his palace and took back the Kamdhenu (Wish fulfil cow) cow from him and killed the Kartavirya arjun along with his army. Ultimately, The rishi rucheeka appeared and made parshuram quit, and told him to went the Mahendragiri Mount for penance and also told him to weapon down. And then the Parshuram threw his axe, and that place where it fall down it becomes land, and at present time this place is known as ‘Kerala’. He had a boon of immortality (Chiranjivi), so it is believed to be alive today in Mahendragiri Mount.

7. The Ram Avatar – Maryadapurushottam :-

The famous and most worshipped incarnation of lord Vishnu was the Ram avatar. This was his seventh avatar, and known as the Maryada Purushottam Ram. He was born at the Ayodhya palace’s king Dashrath and queen Kaushalya. The Ram was prince and king of Ayodhya. The Ram is a commonly worshipped avatar in Hinduism and become an ideal model among mankind. The purpose of ram avatar was to kill the Ravana Demon, who abducted the Sita Mata during the 14 years exile of lord ram. With the help of Hanumanji, Vanar raj (monkey king) Sugriva, Ram & Lakshman travelled to lanka. The lord ram killed the ravan in battle of Ram – Ravan, and get back sita. The Ram, Sita & Lakshman become king and queen of Ayodhya. At last, The Ram had won one of the greatest and most honest wars, but still lived most of his adult life in exile or in misery. The Ram was devoted himself towards his family, people of Ayodhya. In his entire life, he lived for his family. Rishi Valmiki wrote about his entire life in the ‘Ramayana’ epic. And also Tulsidas wrote the life of Ram in the form of ‘Ramcharit Manas’ epic.

8. The Krishna Avatar – Purna Purush :-

This eighth incarnation of lord Vishnu was Krishna. By his naughty lila (work), he won the heart of people. He was eighth son of Devki & Vasudeva. He was born to kill demon Kans, who was his mother’s brother (Mama). He was born at Mathura’s Jail. He was nurtured at the home of Yashoda & Nand’s home. After defeat the kans mama and won the Mathura, he went to Dwarka for life time. He was famous about his divine friendship with Radha and Gopikas in Vrindavan. During this avatar, many of the cursed people got moksha by lord Krishna. Along with kans mama, he also killed putana, bakasur, agasur and so on. He played the most important role in the battle of Mahabharatha. When the Arjuna surrendered himself by weapon down to not fight with his brothers and beloved elders, then Krishna told to him the divine ‘Bhagvad Geeta’ Gyan. He gave the most considered epic in the form of ‘Bhagvad Geeta’. The lord Krishna was considered as a ‘Purna Purushottam’. He lived his life joyfully in spite of having lots of trouble in his life. Ultimately, when the yadav vansh was destroyed, he was killed by pardhi’s (hunter’s) bow at the Bhalka Tirth, Somnath.

9. The Buddha Avatar – a buddhist monk :-

This ninth avatar of lord Vishnu was the legendary among the people. The Buddha avatar took to learn the people about non violence, peace, justice, compassion, truth, kind and so on. He established the Buddhism, where he taught to his disciple to walk on the path of truth, non violence, kind and peace. The Buddha was the one and only son of king shuddhodan and queen yashodhara. His name was Siddhartha. One day, he goes to see the people of kingdom, to see their life style. And suddenly his eye caught the old aged person with disease and that person died in front of him. At that time, he realized about the life, and decided to leave the sansari life and start to live spiritual life. He went to forest and start penance until he got the purpose of life. And one day, he got the spiritual power, knowledge. Thereafter the Siddhartha was known as a ‘Gautam Buddha’. Many people come to him to become his disciple. By lapsing of time, the number of disciple was increased. The Gautam Buddha learn to people about the purpose of life, about good and bad action, peace of mind, uniformity, non violence and so on. He was worshipped in china, japan, Thailand, Singapore, Shri Lanka etc.

This Ninth avatar of lord Vishnu is also considered as a Vitthoba in Maharashtra and as a Jagannatha in Odisha.

10. The Kalki Avatar – Future Incarnation :-

Now, this is the final and last incarnation of lord Vishnu. The lord Vishnu will take Kalki avatar at the end of the Kaliyug. He will appear with white horse and sword. When the sins, bad deeds, non violence, evil things will increase, then he will come to destroy this evil thing that have bad purpose. After this, the Satyug will start again. The tenth avatar of lord Vishnu is not appeared still, but will appear at the end of the Kaliyug.
